The Michigan Series: East Gate - Port Huron 2026
Port Huron is the East Gate of Michigan and is a critical high-level watch area for our state and nation’s safety. The St. Lawrence Seaway water route that flows through this gate goes west into the interior of our nation via Lake Michigan. Michigan's three major international gateways collectively represent one of the most economically significant cross-border corridors in North America.
The Blue Water Bridge has claimed the title of the busiest commercial border crossing between the United States and Canada, surpassing the Ambassador Bridge for the first time in decades. For every month in 2025, the Blue Water Bridge
surpassed the Ambassador Bridge, with about 2.1 million commercial truck trips at Sarnia that year compared to roughly 1.9 million at Windsor. The shift has continued through the first quarter of this year, with more than 531,000 trucks crossing in Port Huron through March, compared to roughly 496,000 in Detroit. Control of this gate matters—economically, politically, and spiritually.
